The astronauts on the International Space Station to take pictures of Chile after a massive earthquake rocked by 8.8 magnitude on the Richter scale that hit the country, revealing the image damage from earthquake shocks.

Chile photos from space, released the U.S. Space agency NASA showed the city was rocked by two earthquakes, ConcepciĆ³n and Hualpen, seven hours after the earthquake struck the South American country Saturday (Sunday GMT).

Earthquake epicenter was about 71 miles (115 km) of coastline and the northern part of the country's northwest.

"Although the picture was not detailed enough to show damage to buildings and roads, some indicators of earthquake damage is evident. Cendawan black smoke visible in the lower left side, near an oil refinery in Hualpen," said NASA's description of the photo.

Lower right side of the photo shows, part of a one-lane bridge in the region around the Bio-Bio River collapsed look. Mushroom white smoke was also visible near the Universidad de Concepcion.

NASA's Terra satellite also photographed the capital of Chile, Santiago, less than an hour after the space station to take pictures. It shows there is more smoke and haze caused by earthquakes or effects of the earthquake, NASA officials said.

Chile earthquake was the seventh most powerful earthquake ever recorded history. Nearly 800 people were killed and damage everywhere earthquake shocks.

The earthquake was so strong that shorten the days of Planet Earth until about 1.25 microseconds and gradually shift the axis of the Earth, so NASA scientists. One mikordetik equal to one millionth of a second.

International Space was "home" for the five astronauts three different institutions. The crew consisted of two Americans from NASA, two Russians and a Japanese astronaut.

Monday, NASA astronaut Timothy "T.J." Creamer ensure co berjejaringnya (followers) in lamam Twitter that he and his colleagues could see from space Chile and was released photos.

A Twitter followers, who claimed Pablo Martinez from Chile to Creamer, said that the astronauts are lucky there in space, far from the reach of earthquakes.

"I'm glad you're okay. We all feel the intensity of this disaster. To keep myself well," said Creamer who posted the message through Astro_TJ account.

Recently, Japanese astronaut Soichi Noguchi to post pictures of Santiago had taken from space.

Photos posted by Astro_Soichi's Twitter account Noguchi showed little foggy city, just when the day was sunny.

Most of the Chilean coastline lies on the boundary between the Nazca tectonic plate the war and the South American plate.

The most powerful earthquake recorded in the last 200 years, reaching 9.5 on the Richter scale, occurred in May 1960 at around 143 miles (230 km) north of Concepcion, according to NASA officials. (*)
